Dennis Zimmerman has been a watercolor artist since his art school days at the Columbus College of Art and Design, where he first fell in love with the medium. For over forty years, he has been challenged and inspired by watercolor’s fluid, unpredictable nature.
His early style focused on wet-into-wet techniques on cold and hot pressed paper, striving for fresh, one-time applications without overworking the piece. Later, Dennis discovered YUPO paper, a synthetic surface that allows paint to skate freely, offering the spontaneous and energetic effects he seeks.
Whether working on traditional watercolor papers or YUPO, Dennis emphasizes strong design, skilled drawing, sound technique, and the play of light—all essential elements that help him tell a story through each painting.
